Things I like, NFL edition

The NFL is back!

I've been a casual football fan for about 4 years. More keen in the past two. Especially keen these past 3 days.

Here are some NFL things I like:

Patrick Mahomes: This is the player that got me into watching the sport. Mahomes is an athletic beast of a player with natural talent and incredible football instincts. He can pull off the most flashy, awe-inspiring moves and, as he did last year, also play a more methodical game when the team demands that of him.

Kirk Cousins: He just seems like a really nice guy. Sometimes he seems a little out of his depth, but then he does insane stuff like that insane comeback, throughout the second half of which I remained seated perfectly still on the very edge of my couch. Go Falcons!

Quarterback and Receiver shows on Netflix: Outstanding behind-the-scenes look at players, their lives, and their dedication to the sport. Amon-Ra St. Brown's life and story is especially interesting, showcasing his German fluency and extremely intense bodybuilder dad.

NFL RedZone: This is the peak sports viewing experience. I've never seen anything like it. The games switch rapidly with barely any time to process the happenings on screen. You've got to be locked in to keep track of what's going on. And the best part - no ads.

Last but not least...

The New York Jets

Blessed as I've been to live in the AFC East (earlier in Massachusetts and now in New Jersey), the Jets have been a terrific source of entertainment.

It was hilarious when it was an absolute train wreck (Remember when, replacing Zach Wilson in 2022, Mike White looked like he was going to save the Jets from themselves right up until he got unceremoniously, season-endingly injured?).

Then they had hopes last year, with the training camp season of Hard Knocks building Aaron Rodgers up into the Messiah Who Would Deliver Long-Awaited Victory Unto The Jets, a dream which collapsed four snaps into the opening game, again unceremoniously, season-endingly. Yet another entry in the tragicomic saga of the Jets.

And then, of course, last night - another loss. Good ol' New York football.

I'm so glad the NFL is back. This is going to be a blast.
